One Language, Four Writing Systems
Japanese is written with a mix of scripts. Kanji (漢字) are logographic characters that carry meaning, hiragana (ひらがな) is the curved kana syllabary used for native words and grammar, and katakana (カタカナ) is the angular kana syllabary used for loanwords, foreign names, and emphasis.
